Down the Corridors of Time

Last night as I looked up at the sky,
I saw the most brilliant, incandescent stars dancing
Across the darkness of the heavens
Thought I’d see you somewhere in the crowd
You must have been hiding just beyond the stars

I often look for you at night, just before
I close my eyes to end another day
I draw comfort knowing that even if I
Don’t wake up here, I’ll be there in the
Company of those gone before me

I fixate on the feel of the sheets beneath
Me, I cling to the blanket that covers and shields
Me - the air seems unusually cold for
This date in late August….I shiver

Letting my mind drift through the stairwell
Of time, I hold on to some things and
Quickly discard others

I push to stay present although it seems to
gets harder and harder as the time
Moves so quickly these days.
A whirlwind of emotion sweeps over me
As I close my eyes to welcome sleep.
I embrace the kaleidoscope of images that
Dance through my mind reminding me
Of where I’ve been - of just how far I’ve come.

Embracing the here and now, I count my blessings and take
Nothing for granted.

Just down the corridor, around the bend there awaits
A new adventure, a new way, a new thing
I embrace each new day with newfound courage and
Determination to spread as much joy as I can for as long
As I have breath.

“Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day” Henri J.M. Nouwen
